Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) for Sleep Apnea in Pregnancy (SLEEP)

Principal Investigators: Mary Norton, MD; Teresa Sparks, MD, MAS; Ben Li, MD

The purpose of the study is to understand if using a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine lowers the risk of high blood pressure and gestational diabetes among pregnant patients who pause breathing while they sleep (sleep apnea).  To do this, researchers at UCSF are accepting pregnant volunteers who wish to be a screened for sleep apnea by taking a 1-time at-home sleep test. Participants who have mild or moderate sleep apnea will be invited to the main study, where they will be randomized (like flipping a coin) into one of two groups: (1) CPAP-use group or (2) sleep hygiene education group.

Azithromycin Prophylaxis for PRElabor CEsarean DElivery Trial (PRECEDE)

Principal Investigators: Mary Norton, MD; Teresa Sparks, MD, MAS

The PRECEDE trial is studying the prevention of post-cesarean infections for pregnant patients who have a scheduled cesarean delivery. Participants are randomized into one of two groups and receive either an FDA approved antibiotic (azithromycin) or placebo (saline) at the time of delivery. They also complete a short prenatal and postpartum questionnaire.
